Middle Ages Homework

Good Morrow, Sages.

Follow this link and read ALL sections ("Feudal Life, Religion, Homes, Clothing, etc.) of this unit from learner.org.  You will need to enter the site via the button on the bottom of the page that says [surprise!] "Enter".  Be sure to read the "Read more about..." too!  In these extended sections, you will find some interesting activities; be sure to dive into these as well.

Your homework is to post, here on the blog, your response to AT LEAST ONE thing that you learned on this site, AND respond specifically to another student's post.

EX: "This is Ethan and I learned that medieval architecture was...I find this interesting because....
And, hey, Joey, what you said about knights and their role in the king's court was super-astute!  I happened to like the part about the knights' extra-fancy..."

PLEASE read everyone's post that has contributed at the time that you do your homework.  Make sure that you respond THOUGHTFULLY, rather than just writing the minimum amount you feel will get your homework checked off...

DUE by 9:00pm on Thursday, May 24th.

    2. This is Selena. I thought it was interesting how most of the art was based on Christ and christian saints and how they were put in churches to help them worship. Also because people couldn't read how the art told the story for them.

  2. I think that it was really cool that the archaeological studies that are happening now are finds out what they did and what they ate. Also it was fascinating that they started producing the bible with printing companies.

  4. Hi, this is Jaida and I thought that the windows in the houses were a large architectural achievement during The Middle Ages. Although the houses themselves were made of poor construction, the windows were wisely thought out by builders in order to give tenants a view of the outside world without impeding the tenants privacy . Builders small cut holes in the walls in order to allow minimal amounts of light into the house, shutters or pieces of wood covered the windows at night or when the weather was unpleasant.
And Ila... I agree with you it would be crazy to go to church 8 times a day! I would be so bored! Haha

  5. This is Caleb. I thought it was really cool that they thought about health in terms of elements, body fluids, and how there had to be a balance between them. Fire was for bile and choler, water for snot, earth for black bile, and air for blood. This system reminded me of the Chinese medicinal system. Ila, I also thought it was crazy how many times a day monks prayed and how devoted they were to Christianity.

  6. This is lakota and I think it is interesting that there was only the one christian church. Because now there is many branches of Christianity and that the church had its own laws. Jaida i agree with what you said about architect (that would be very cold with no glass panes?!)

  7. this is Natalie... I thought it was incredibly interesting that they had the woman doing both cooking, cleaning, chores and all of the cool warrior and hunting stuff. I also thought it was kinda cool how they could tell the order by the colors and style of clothing they wore. I would never be able to live in an environment like they did; cold, dark, and damp... that must have sucked!

  9. hey this is william. I think it is interesting and sad that normal townsfolk couldn't have the aid of some medical expert who lived in the courts and castles. The medical experts often prescribed remedies that would actually kill the patient with and herb!! And Caleb i also agree with how you like how the people thought about elements in terms of medical health and wellness.

I always thought what are worled whould be like if during the time of kingdoms they had cars, self phones, planes, elavators and computers. I wonder what are worled now wouled be like.?

  15. Hi this is Gianna, and I thought that it was cool that after the year 1000, a new age of peace and prosperity "grew", making Europe a cool place to be in the Middle Ages.

*And yes Natalie, that was very interesting that the women did practicaly everything! I like that women could have jobs such as Apothecaries (yay!), Black Smiths, etc. Coolio narwhales! :)

  16. Hello it's Alex, and i found it very interesting that the masons were above everybody else in the merchant class and that they were the ones to build very important buildings. Originally i believed that the masons only did statues and that they were treated very poorly. I am glad i found this fact :)

*And yes lakota i did also find it very odd that there would only be one christian church.

  17. Hello, it's Rane as Ethan made clear this morning! I thought that it was kind of weird that 2 people had to play the same instrument!
Ila! I agree! i could never imagine going to church 8 times a day!

  18. Hi its Elani, I find it really cray, cray (haha) that the way you dressed back then mad such a significant remark (like an inch off your coat would determine which class you are.

Ila! That's crazy! I would never be able to drag myself out of bed at 2:00 AM to go to church!

  19. Hey Ben speaking, I think that having an two people playing the same instrament is good because two is better than three right. well if you mess up you can blame it on the other person like "well he did not crank the handle in the correct way" or "he kicked me" so if there was three people think of the shouts were the organ is playing. Also I want to learn about Jonah and the whale and Danial in the loin's den because they sound cool> also the costumes must have looked ridiculas compared to our ones but they must have bin state of the art.

Ben sighning off *Bloop* buzz cracle

  20. Its Sara! Sorrry i'm late on assignment. :( I thought it was really odd that medieval Europe didn't have any health care system, what would you do if you broke your leg? And i'm suprised that they had such poor housing, it said that their houses were cold, damp, and dark. And Elani I found it craycray that just by and inch off your coat they determined what class you're in too! hahaha I used the word craycray I told you I would!!

  22. Hey it's Lily. Blogger isn't working on my account so Caleb kindly let me use his. I found it interesting that music played an important in daily church services. Monks and priests would chant hymns while church bells or organs played. There was also an instrument called a hurdy-gurdy that was played by two people, one wound a crank and the other would play the strings. If you go on wiki you can see a picture. Sara, I agree with your comment about healthcare since my mom has a broken leg I can't imagine what would happen to her during those times.

  23. I found it interesting that they thought that disease and illness was spread from bad odors, they also thought that ravens could 'scare' away disease, that is why the plague doctors would wear a ravens mask, inside the mask there would be sweat smelling herbs.
they also wore full body robes, which would keep fleas away from the doctor. but they didn't know that.

  24. This is Colin and i found it interesting that the castle kitchens were so large and advanced. I read that some of the ovens could cook entire cows at a time!! That's a big oven!! Elani, I agree that is very interesting about how small features are used to determine your class
